Spherical roller bearings are double row, combination radial and thrust bearings which can self-align. The rolling element they use is a spherical or crowned roller. The outer ring contains a spherical race allowing for some misalignment of the shaft and housing. The symmetrical barrel rollers freely align themselves to the concave outer ring raceway. As a result, shaft deflections and misalignments of the bearing seats are compensated. Spherical roller bearings have superb capacity for high loads and tolerance to shock loads, while their speed capabilities are limited. According to some estimates, spherical roller bearings have almost two times the life that conventional bearings have.

Spherical roller bearings are generally made of alloy steels or low carbon steels. In some cases chrome plated spherical roller bearings are also available. Some applications require the use of case-hardened or thorough-hardened, high-carbon, bearing quality steel. High-carbon grades of steel do not require carburizing. For low-carbon, carburized steel grades, the carbon is introduced after the spherical roller bearings are machined to a depth sufficient to produce a hardened case that can sustain bearing loads.

At Precision Bearings, we have spherical roller bearings available with specifications as provided in the table above.
